Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between standard and quick response?

The bulb size. Quick-response sprinklers use a 3 mm glass bulb that bursts sooner, activating the head earlier in a fire; standard-response types use a 5 mm bulb. Quick response is preferred in life-safety occupancies such as hotels, hospitals and dormitories.

How do I choose the temperature rating?

By the maximum ambient temperature at the ceiling. Ordinary spaces use 57 °C or 68 °C ratings; areas near heat sources — kitchens, boiler rooms, skylights — use 79, 93 or 141 °C so the sprinkler does not operate from normal heat.

Pendent, upright or sidewall — which configuration?

Pendent heads hang below a ceiling and suit finished spaces; upright heads sit on exposed pipework with the deflector up, common in car parks and plant areas; sidewall heads project from the wall where ceiling piping is impractical, such as corridors and hotel rooms.

How does the glass bulb trigger the sprinkler?

The bulb holds a heat-sensitive liquid that expands as the ceiling temperature rises; at the rated temperature the bulb bursts, releasing the seal so water discharges onto the deflector. A 3 mm bulb responds faster than the 5 mm standard bulb.

Can the sprinklers be used with escutcheons?

Yes. Pendent and sidewall heads accept escutcheon plates to trim the ceiling or wall opening, and white, chrome and brass finishes are available to match the interior.
