Frequently Asked Questions

What is a rubber steam hose used for?

A rubber steam hose conveys saturated steam and hot water for equipment cleaning, sterilising, vulcanising, jacket heating and hot-water wash-down. It is a safety-critical hose built from EPDM with steel wire-braid reinforcement.

Why are steam hoses made from EPDM?

EPDM keeps its strength and flexibility in continuous heat and resists steam and ozone far better than general-purpose rubbers, so it does not harden or crack under saturated-steam service. That makes it the standard tube and cover compound for steam hose.

What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 steam hose?

Under EN ISO 6134, Type 1 is rated for saturated steam up to 6 bar (about 164 °C) and Type 2 for saturated steam up to 18 bar (about 210 °C). The type is chosen from your actual steam pressure and temperature.

Why do steam hoses have such a high safety factor?

Because a steam-hose failure releases scalding vapour instantly, steam hoses are designed with a much larger margin between working and burst pressure than ordinary hose — typically around 10:1 — so that ageing, damage or a pressure spike does not cause a sudden rupture.

Why is the cover of a steam hose pin-pricked?

Fine perforations let any steam that permeates the tube escape through the cover instead of collecting under it and forming blisters. Pin-pricking keeps the cover bonded and extends the hose's safe service life.
