Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a reflex and a transparent level gauge?
A reflex gauge uses one prismatic glass and reads the level as a black-and-silver contrast; it is ideal for a single, clean liquid. A transparent gauge uses two flat glasses with the liquid seen between them and is chosen where you must see colour, view a liquid–liquid interface, or shield the glass with mica against steam or caustic media.
Does a reflex level indicator need power or a light?
No. It is entirely optical and mechanical and reads clearly in daylight or ambient light. A simple lamp can be fitted for night-time viewing, but no electrical supply is needed to operate it.
Which liquids suit a reflex gauge?
Clean, non-crystallising liquids that do not attack borosilicate glass. For high-pressure steam, strongly alkaline or hydrofluoric media, a transparent gauge with mica or PTFE shields is the better choice — TOTFLEX will advise based on your medium.
What are automatic ball-check valves for?
They are built into the gauge isolation valves and shut off the connection to the vessel automatically if the glass is broken, limiting release of the process fluid and improving operator safety.
What pressure and temperature can a reflex indicator handle?
The rating is set by the glass and gasket build, from vacuum and atmospheric duty up to elevated boiler pressures and temperatures. Each unit is specified and rated for its exact service conditions.
